Banned Books Week

This week (September 30th–October 6th) is the American Library Association’s Banned Books Week 2012. This year marks the 30th year of celebrating the freedom to read.

“Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community – librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types – in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.” —Banned Books Week, ala.org

Byrd’s Books is celebrating Banned Books Week with a weeklong display of some popular banned books. You might be surprised at some of the titles that have been banned just in recent years – books ranging from Laurie Halse Anderson’s classic Speak to the tremendously popular The Hunger Games trilogy. This week, all banned books are on sale at 20% off – even if they’re not in the display. Just mention that the book is banned at the register for the discount!
